Stu Dalton is a member of several bay area Rose Societies including: EBRS, Peninsula Rose Society (PRS) Past President, 1988, 2018-19. American Rose Society (ARS)member since 1985. Master Rosarian, UCCE Master Gardener San Mateo and San Francisco Counties.
Midyear care emphasizes removing spent blooms (aka deadheading), opening the middle andsummer pruning, watering deeply, mulching ,improving soil health and checking for issuesincluding pests and diseases. Planting a variety of plants that attract beneficials can lessen issues. The heat then rain in the mid bay microclimate hit the early first boom hard , with highamounts of blackspot , rust and mildew. He will talk about his Integrated Pest Management(IPM) approach.
Stu grew up on a farm then in Oakland and helped his dad in a neighbor’s rose garden at 10 and has been growing roses for over 50 years. He now has over 250 of many types in his Menlo Park home and also grows about 15 Camellias, fruit trees, vegetables, , orchids, natives, and other plants, some over 40 years old. He has given talks at garden societies, libraries, nurseries and garden materials supply and taught nutrition for a consulting rosarian class. He has been teaching rose care and giving pruning and doing other rose demonstrations and talks for decades.
